The Adoption Process
At Kingfisher Equine Rehab & Rehome Inc., every adoption is approached with one goal in mind: finding the right forever home for each horse. Our process is designed to prioritize welfare, safety, transparency, and long-term success for both horse and adopter.
Many of the horses in our program are retired Thoroughbreds transitioning into second careers after racing, rehabilitation, or sanctuary care. We take time to carefully evaluate each placement to ensure the best possible match.
01
Inquiry & Pre-Screen
Every adoption begins with an initial conversation. Prospective adopters are encouraged to reach out to learn more about the horse they are interested in and discuss their experience, goals, and environment.
This first step helps us determine whether a horse may be a suitable match before moving forward with a formal application.
02
Adoption Application
Interested adopters complete a detailed Adoption Application. The application allows our team to better understand:
. Riding and horse ownership experience
. Facility and turnout arrangements
. Intended discipline or use
. Veterinary and farrier plans
. Long-term care expectations
Our process is welfare-based, and submitting an application does not guarantee approval.
03
Review & Evaluation
Applications are reviewed carefully by our rehabilitation and program team. We consider:
Experience and horsemanship
Safety and environment
Compatibility between horse and adopter
The physical and emotional needs of the horse
Long-term placement stability
Additional information or references may be requested if needed.
04
Meet & Greet
If the application moves forward, we schedule an in-person meet-and-greet or evaluation visit.
This gives adopters the opportunity to:
Spend time with the horse
Ask questions
Discuss goals and expectations
Learn about the horse’s personality, history, and care needs
Our team also evaluates the interaction to help determine if the match is appropriate for both horse and adopter..
05
Adoption Decision
After the evaluation process, KERRI will make a final decision regarding placement. Decisions may include:
. Approved
. Approved with conditions
. Deferred
. Declined
Some horses may require special conditions, additional training, or continued rehabilitation before placement. KERRI reserves the right to decline any adoption that is not in the best interest of the horse.
06
Adoption Agreement
Approved adopters will receive an Equine Adoption Contract outlining the responsibilities and expectations of ownership.
Key protections within our program include:
. No slaughter or auction placement
. No return to racing
. A required return-to-KERRI clause if the adopter can no longer keep the horse
Continued welfare protections and follow-up expectations
The adoption must be fully completed and signed prior to transfer.
07
Transition & Going Home
Before the horse leaves for their new home, our team will:
. Review transition and care recommendations
. Provide medical and rehabilitation information where appropriate.
. Confirm identification and documentation
. Assist with a smooth transition plan
We want every horse to feel safe, supported, and set up for success in their new environment.
08
Post-Adoption Follow-Up
Our commitment to our horses does not end at adoption.
KERRI conducts post-adoption follow-ups to ensure horses continue to thrive in their new homes. Depending on the horse and situation, this may include:
. Check-ins
. Photos or updates
. Veterinary updates
. Continued support and guidance
We believe aftercare is a lifelong commitment.
Our Commitment
At KERRI, we believe every Thoroughbred deserves dignity, safety, and a meaningful future beyond the racetrack. Our adoption process is designed to protect the long-term welfare of each horse while helping create successful partnerships built on trust, education, and compassion.
